RYOBI 18 Volt Cordless Drill

This is the single most useful tool I own. From obvious functions like drilling holes and driving screws to less common applications such as stripping paint and grinding metal, an 18 volt drill provides power and versatility. I've had great results with my RYOBI 18 volt drill, which features a LED light that's great for working in dark spaces. The drill can also double as a household appliance. I use mine in the kitchen instead of an electric mixer.

 Ben’s Tip:  Allen head attachments can make assembling IKEA furniture super fast.

2x12s
Available at Home Depot
2x12s are typically used for rough framing and heavy duty construction. They're big thick slabs of wood – usually either spruce pine or fir – that come at a very affordable price. Each piece can vary quite a bit aesthetically so take your time and search for attractive looking pieces. The affordability and rustic aesthetic make them a staple for many of my DIY projects. A 12 foot long board typically runs $12-$16 at Home Depot.

A plain 2x12 and a couple cinder blocks makes a handy bench or a quick and dirty media stand. Attach a few together and you have a sturdy table top for less than $40.

 Ben’s Tip:  Have 2x12s cut down to length at Home Depot. This saves you some work and also makes them easier to carry and fit into your car.

RYOBI 5.5 Cordless 18 Volt Circular Saw

I got my cordless circular saw in a RYOBI tool kit. This is a great tool that is less intimidating than a more powerful, corded saw. What it lacks in power it makes up for in convenience. For everyday cutting needs it performs admirable and the laser guide makes precision cutting a lot easier for beginners.

Iron Pipe

Threaded plumbing pipes are like adult Legos. They can easily be connected to make all sorts of useful stuff. These ready-made fittings are available at Home Depot and are durable, rugged components that can be utilized for all sorts of projects. Most of my projects use 3/4" piping but larger and smaller diameters are also available. I prefer the look of the black iron pipes but would opt for the rust protected, dull silver colored, galvanized pipes for outdoor projects.

RYOBI Orbital Sander

An orbital sander is an extremely affordable power tool that can save you a ton of time. You can switch out different types of sanding pads and quickly perform all flat sanding tasks.
