DIY Success Stories: Anna Macoby

HomeMade Modern DIY Success Stories Anna Macoby

Profile: Anna Macoby
Project: EP8 $5 Bucket Stool

Anna is a 32 year old florist/gardener who recently moved with her husband to Brooklyn, NY, from Perth, Australia. Making kokedama (moss balls) for events is her specialty.
"I am obsessed with concrete and think it is such a fantastically beautiful, natural and sustainable material. I particularly love the way it weathers over time and develops its own beautiful patina. I have been experimenting with making items from concrete for five or six years. I love that it’s so affordable, accessible and customisable. Mostly I make planters but recently I have also been making incense burners, candle holders and other objects from concrete. I also teach workshops in New York at Brooklyn Brainery and in Perth at studiOH! in making kokedama and concrete planters and in various other crafty topics.

I’ve just launched a new online store called Tasi Masi where I sell some of my concrete creations and other “nature art”. I’m really inspired by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which is basically the appreciation of the imperfections of nature and the transience of natural beauty. It’s the imperfections in concrete objects and the way they change over time that I love most of all.

I love the concrete stool for its simplicity and the nice clean lines. Plus it’s super practical!"

I really like the boxes and concrete planters Anna features on Tasi Masi. There is something so simple, wholesome and playful about her work.
